Chosen Country

a project by Joey Rubin and Julie Smits

Each of my four grandparents were born in a different country—only one died in the country in which they were born. This project is an attempt to make sense of what it means to choose (or have chosen for you) a home; it's an investigation and an attempt to understand using photos, memories, vignettes, stories, and art. I developed artwork to accompany the stories Joey was writing about his family. A visualisation of the imperfection of memory and the stories that are passed along from generation to generation. How those stories can be reshaped once they are retold and how we choose to frame them.

The typography follows the same line of thought, stretched, mashed, fitted, sometimes uncertain to symbolise the conflict that can arise from having a home chosen for you and choosing one yourself.
